February News

These kids today, they don't know what real music is. Why, if they were smart they would harass their parents into taking them to Kidrockers, where this very special Valentine's Day event features exotic beat auteurs Dengue Fever. The L.A.-based combo's mishmash of vintage Cambodian lounge pop, surfin' & spyin' skanks and evocative psychedelia features birdlike Cambodian singer Chhom Nagol, along with founders Ethan and Zac Holtzman on Farfisa, bargain-basement synth and slippery Strats — a sound just faithful enough to the stuff the Holtzman Bros. found on old cassettes behind fish markets in Phnom Penh. The band recently released a DVD documentary film, Sleepwalking Through the Mekong, that follows Dengue to Cambodia in 2005, when they became the first Western band to perform Khmer Rock since the fall of the Khmer Rouge.  Concert Review: Kidrockers presents Silversun Pickups and The Henry Clay People

A week and a half ago, Kidrockers took over the Echo to put on a one of a kind show.  Silversun Pickups and Henry Clay People were on hand to provide a party soundtrack for the new generation.

Thos unfamiliar with Kidrockers either don’t have kids, aren’t into music, or both.  Kidrockers is a series of shows that take place across the country that brings music to kids.  We’re not talking music like Raffi and The Wiggles.  This is real music.  Real music that grown ups listen to.  It’s just presented in a kid friendly environment, or in the case of this show a small club transformed into a kid friendly environment.  The Echo looked very different during Kidrockers compared to normal shows.  The center of the floor was cleared off, and placed on it was a plethora of Twister mats with cushions on top.  This area was for the kids to have a seat and dance if they wanted.  Kidrockers also took place at 1pm on a Sunday, which isn’t normal concert time, but perhaps it’s normal kid time.

Concert Review: Silversun Pickups and the Henry Clay People live @ Kidrockers (The Echo – 11/8/09)

By Travis Woods

As part of the excellent and admirable Kidrockers series of concerts—in which indie music artists perform for children and their parents—the Silversun Pickups and the Henry Clay People, two hometown favorites returning from their respective fall tours, performed together at the Echo on Sunday afternoon, filling the room with a wall-to-wall mass of kids and their rock-savvy parents, with the Henry Clays modifying their rock ‘n roll classicism for the under 18-crowd (lyrical references to beer were quickly and humorously ad-libbed to Hi-C) and the Pickups playing a full-band acoustic set.

The Henry Clay People’s set was one that emphasized the absurdist humor and silliness of the band, featuring as its centerpiece—amongst such standard and crowd pleasing HCP fare as “Something in the Water” and “Switch Kids”—a goofy and guitar-driven ten-minute take on “Old McDonald Had A Farm,” in which the band took animal requests from the audience throughout the song, beginning with a cow and ending with a monkeygoat.  It was that kind of show, and one the Clay People were perfect for after a long tour.

Headliners the Silversun Pickups were on next, playing a fiery and funny set of acoustic originals, stripping back their monolithic fuzzbox sound for the smaller ears in the audience while continually infusing the quiet sound with massive energy and heart.  Opening with a foot-stomped and insistent “Rusted Wheel,” the band ran through the singles to this year’s Swoon—a frenzied “Panic Switch,” featuring Brian Aubert’s throat-cracked screams over a hushed acoustic bedrock, and the gentle, swaying hooks of “Substitution”—before taking a question-and-answer session from the kids in the audience.  Upon being asked what their first song was, Aubert led the band in an impromptu surprise performance of the breathy “Kissing Families” from 2005’s Pikul EP, before bringing the show to an epic close with a singalong version of “Lazy Eye,” during which a parade of children and balloons crashed the stage to surround the band.  While the short performances definitely left the crowd wanting more, not a single adult or child was seen wandering the venue after the show without a dazed smile across their face.

 KIDROCKERS
Absolutely genius… get real indie artists (previous have included Ra Ra Riot, Los Campesinos!, Vivian Girls, Rogue Wave) and have them perform live afternoon concerts for an audience of children.  Complete with comedian emcees, cocktails for the adults (depending on the venue, it varies) and audience participation, these events are fun for parents and kids alike.  Just watch out for when the kids storm the stage… it can get ugly.

LA WEEKLY June 2009

YOUTH GONE WILD by Lina Lecaro June 3, 2009 http://www.laweekly.com/slideshow/view/15344773/35

The events are during the day, the bands — while bonafide indie artists we wanna see doing their own material — play to the tykes first and foremost, and the amps are turned up just enough to please both grown-up and li’l ears (no protective headphones necessary). Born in New York, the series has had everyone from Vivian Girls to Ra Ra Riot in NYC. In L.A., Dangerbird Records took over with Eulogies and One AM Radio last month. (With lineups like these and K.R.’s “adults must be accompanied by a kid” policy, it’s no surprise hip aunts and uncles and godparents alike are all for babysitting when the gathering comes to town.) Sunday, Langhorne Slim and One Trick Pony offered rock-trotting sets (the former’s folky grooves, according to creator Beth Marx Lorge, actually inspired her to create the series in the first place). Little ones of all ages stomped about a sea of Twister game mats on the floor, and joined each artist onstage to jam with maracas, but the non-musical portion of the event was just as uproarious. As with all Kidrockers parties, there was a Q&A session with the kids and performers. Sunday, one li’l guy got the grown-ups giggling — and left Slim a bit flustered — with this insightful query: “Did you always think about trying to be a player?”

In a city where the stroller set may still want to incorporate live music into their lives, it's only fitting that someone has created an event series that allows them to do so. Kidrockers brings kids, their parents and indie rock together

On Sunday, though, the performances took a backseat to the kids' savage wit. From the Q&A's:

Herzog: Do you play an instrument?
4-year-old boy: I pretend to play trombone.

7-year-old girl [to Vivian Girls]: If you had a boy in your band, would you change your name?
Cassie Ramone: Probably not. We had a guy fill in on drums once.
7-year-old girl: Was the guy annoyed?

The Parson Red Heads

Last Sunday was the second edition of Kidrockers, hosted by comedians Seth Herzog (MySpace) and Greg Behrendt (MySpace), with performances by local indie bands The Henry Clay People (MySpace) and The Parson Red Heads (MySpace).

As blogged by Red Heads' frontman Evan Way:

The next morning we had to be at The Echo at 11am for a really exciting event -- a Kidrockers show with our pals Henry Clay People. What is Kidrockers, you may ask? Well, let me tell you. Two bands play 4 or 5 song sets, followed by question and answer sessions. People can only attend if they bring at least one child with them (thus the name... duh). So we got to play a great afternoon rock show to a great crowd of eager kids. They were a great audience. We handed out a bunch of tambourines and shakers, and invited a good 10 to 15 kids on stage, and had a real party. Those kids can really play! They put us to shame!

There was also an impromptu music clinic after their performance, with several children unleashing their inner guitar heroes on Brette Way's drumkit and Charlie Hester's guitar, and Hester offering the following advice to one student, "Never quit playing guitar. It's the best thing ever."

The next edition of Kidrockers is scheduled for January or February at The Echo with artists TBA. Meanwhile, The Henry Clay People's upcoming shows are on December 18th at The Prospector (MySpace) in Long Beach and December 31st at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake.

Paper Magazine Tip for January 11, 2009

We slightly resent the premise of this afternoon's "Kidrockers" show (all adults are required to bring a child to gain entry), but if that's the price to pay for seeing the Vivan Girls on an otherwise dreary Sunday afternoon, heck, we'll just steal one from the subway.  Our favorite new girl group plays alongside three-piece, bluesy, East-Village-based band The Bones Royal.

New York Times Nov 20 2008 - KIDROCKERS FALL ROCKSTIVAL

Spare Times: For Children By LAUREL GRAEBER Published: November 20, 2008

It’s hard to imagine mature, self-respecting childless adults wanting — much less needing — to sneak into a kids’ show. But Beth Lorge has met such desperate grown-ups.

“People blog, ‘Has anyone got a kid I can borrow?’ ” she said. That’s because unaccompanied adults are not allowed into the concerts Ms. Lorge produces. Now consider that the groups playing are hot or up-and-coming rock bands, and you can understand why hip young adults are suddenly eager to volunteer as baby sitters.

Ms. Lorge, the mother of a 9-year-old and a 5-year-old, founded Kidrockers, a concert series bringing contemporary music to families. On Sunday the Kidrockers Fall Rockstival comes to 92YTriBeCa as part of its B.Y.O.K. (Bring Your Own Kid) series. Not surprisingly, Bishop Allen, one of the rockstival bands, is headlining shows for an older crowd on Saturday and Sunday nights at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.

“None of this music was created for kids,” explained Ms. Lorge, whose lineup also features Chris Barron and the Time Bandits (Mr. Barron doubles as the frontman for Spin Doctors) and the indie band Locksley. “We don’t limit the songs’ topics or emotions.” (She does draw the line at obscene lyrics.)

Kidrockers events, however, are not just afternoon editions of adult shows. The rockstival, geared to ages 3 to 13, will be hosted by the comedians Seth Herzog and Craig Baldo, who will create a game show atmosphere between sets. Children can compete in trivia contests like Fill in the Lyric and play games like Pin the Pick on the Guitar. They can meet the musicians (above from left, Mr. Barron with Bishop Allen’s Christian Rudder, Darbie Nowatka and Justin Rice) and may even try out instruments, as well as enjoy rock-star face painting.

“We did a bunch of Amy Winehouse tattoos on my son once,” Ms. Lorge said, noting that he went on to portray Ms. Winehouse this Halloween. “She’s not the best role model,” Ms. Lorge acknowledged, “but she’s got some great music.” (Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m., 200 Hudson Street, at Canal Street, 212-601-1000,  92ytribeca.org; $11 in advance, $15 at the door.) ... Kidrockers, an interesting series born in New York and now coming to Echo Park, seems partly designed to give bands instruction on how to play to the junior seats.

Kidrockers features artists who usually play for grown-ups trying out the kiddie crowd. Founded by (who else?) a couple who craved live music they could enjoy along with their kids, the series has presented top-notch indie pop artists including Los Campesinos!, Ra Ra Riot and Tad Kubler of the Hold Steady.

ROCK OUT WITH THE BLOCKS OUT: Kid Stuff with Cool Cred by Lina Lecaro

This week we profiled the ebullient pre-school TV sensation Yo Gabba Gabba, but the show (created by two So Cal rocker dads) isn't the only alternative for parents sick of dumbed-down cartoons and uninspired kiddie ditties. More and more artists from the rock world are exploring the children's market, offering fun and quirky fare for indie baby mamas n' papas, and kids at heart alike. Below, some that earn an extra shiny gold star.

KiDROCKERS. Promoting kid n' parent-friendly shows featuring grown-up rock bands for two years now in New York, the rockin' romper room made it's West Coast debut at the Echo earlier this month with The Deadly Syndrome and The Afternoons. Their next runt ragin' show is sure to be another rattler.

It was only a matter of time before hipster boys and girls grew up to have boys and girls of their own, and were left with the dilemma of how to reconcile a live music obsession with a dearth of available babysitters. Presto chango diapero! Kidrockers to your rescue! Beg, borrow, or reproduce – all you need is a little one and a sense of adventure to enjoy a family-friendly afternoon of music (not necessarily kid-specific jams) tomorrow afternoon at The Echo. Past bands of this New York staple include Los Campesinos!, Pela, Rogue Wave, Ra Ra Riot, Harlem Shakes, and Bishop Allen. Come join funny man Patton Oswalt (better known as Rémy to your Ratatouille-loving four year old) and co-host Seth Herzog to kick off the West Coast-incarnation, featuring LA’s The Deadly Syndrome.
