LA: November 8 LA Silversun Pickups, THCP Hosts Greg Behrendt and Matt Dwyer

Concert Review: Silversun Pickups and the Henry Clay People live @ Kidrockers (The Echo – 11/8/09)

By Travis Woods

As part of the excellent and admirable Kidrockers series of concerts—in which indie music artists perform for children and their parents—the Silversun Pickups and the Henry Clay People, two hometown favorites returning from their respective fall tours, performed together at the Echo on Sunday afternoon, filling the room with a wall-to-wall mass of kids and their rock-savvy parents, with the Henry Clays modifying their rock ‘n roll classicism for the under 18-crowd (lyrical references to beer were quickly and humorously ad-libbed to Hi-C) and the Pickups playing a full-band acoustic set.

The Henry Clay People’s set was one that emphasized the absurdist humor and silliness of the band, featuring as its centerpiece—amongst such standard and crowd pleasing HCP fare as “Something in the Water” and “Switch Kids”—a goofy and guitar-driven ten-minute take on “Old McDonald Had A Farm,” in which the band took animal requests from the audience throughout the song, beginning with a cow and ending with a monkeygoat.  It was that kind of show, and one the Clay People were perfect for after a long tour.

Headliners the Silversun Pickups were on next, playing a fiery and funny set of acoustic originals, stripping back their monolithic fuzzbox sound for the smaller ears in the audience while continually infusing the quiet sound with massive energy and heart.  Opening with a foot-stomped and insistent “Rusted Wheel,” the band ran through the singles to this year’s Swoon—a frenzied “Panic Switch,” featuring Brian Aubert’s throat-cracked screams over a hushed acoustic bedrock, and the gentle, swaying hooks of “Substitution”—before taking a question-and-answer session from the kids in the audience.  Upon being asked what their first song was, Aubert led the band in an impromptu surprise performance of the breathy “Kissing Families” from 2005’s Pikul EP, before bringing the show to an epic close with a singalong version of “Lazy Eye,” during which a parade of children and balloons crashed the stage to surround the band.  While the short performances definitely left the crowd wanting more, not a single adult or child was seen wandering the venue after the show without a dazed smile across their face.

LA: October 4 - The Damselles and Quazar & The Bamboozled

The Damselles & The TC4

As mentioned earlier this month, the family-friendly Kidrockers kicked off its second season at The Echo, hosted by comedians Matt Dwyer and Emily Maya Mills, with music by The Damselles & the TC4 and Quazar & the Bamboozled.

"Sometimes getting away from it all is as close as LA, and sometimes you can even take your kids with you," says Peace, Love and Momminess. "Kidrockers is a whole new concept in arts and entertainment if you ask me. Top Indie bands, who’ve toured Europe, have been on Letterman and normally play for adults, put on a show for kids to inspire the next generation and bring families together. Rock on. ... Twister vinyl lines the floor in classic kid style, the kids dance and get to get up on stage."

Next month's show, hosted by Dwyer and Seth Herzog, features Kidrockers veterans The Henry Clay People and very special guests.

Kidrockers takes place on Sunday, November 8th. 1:00-2:30 PM. $9 via TicketWeb and $12 at the door. All ages, but adults must be accompanied by a child.

May 31, 2009 LA Kidrockers presents Langhorne Slim and The One AM Radio

YOUTH GONE WILD by Lina Lecaro June 3, 2009 http://www.laweekly.com/slideshow/view/15344773/31 photos by Lina Lecaro

The events are during the day, the bands — while bonafide indie artists we wanna see doing their own material — play to the tykes first and foremost, and the amps are turned up just enough to please both grown-up and li’l ears (no protective headphones necessary). Born in New York, the series has had everyone from Vivian Girls to Ra Ra Riot in NYC. In L.A., Dangerbird Records took over with Eulogies and One AM Radio last month. (With lineups like these and K.R.’s “adults must be accompanied by a kid” policy, it’s no surprise hip aunts and uncles and godparents alike are all for babysitting when the gathering comes to town.) Sunday, Langhorne Slim and One Trick Pony offered rock-trotting sets (the former’s folky grooves, according to creator Beth Marx Lorge, actually inspired her to create the series in the first place). Little ones of all ages stomped about a sea of Twister game mats on the floor, and joined each artist onstage to jam with maracas, but the non-musical portion of the event was just as uproarious. As with all Kidrockers parties, there was a Q&A session with the kids and performers. Sunday, one li’l guy got the grown-ups giggling — and left Slim a bit flustered — with this insightful query: “Did you always think about trying to be a player?”

" Yesterday we played and hung out with children for a while at the Living Room on Ludlow. It was for a kickrockers party, check out what they are all about right here! We would like to thank Kidrockers for putting something really nice together and inviting us dynamites to it. It was a lot of fun. I taught one child the difference between her left and right hand, played a little twister, tony blew up many happy face balloons for the little ones, took a nice Q & A session with them. One of the better questions came from a three year old who asked” when will u break up!?”
here is a little clip of us playing No Fights(Pas De Combats)" from ROD blog.

Kidrockers presents Radar Bros and Le Switch.  Hosted by Matt Dwyer and Matt Braunger. Sunday March 29 @ The Echo.  Photos in the LAist by Jeff Koga.

Last Sunday was the fourth edition of Kidrockers at The Echo (MySpace), hosted by comedians Matt Dwyer (MySpace) and Matt Braunger (MySpace), with performances by local indie bands Le Switch (MySpace) and Radar Bros (MySpace).

With this show, it is become readily apparent that the Kidrockers brand, which was established in New York and started here late last year, is now strong enough to pack the room, regardless of their musical lineup.

The next edition of Kidrockers is scheduled for Sunday, April 26th and will be a Dangerbird Records showcase featuring Eulogies (MySpace) and The One AM Radio (MySpace). Meanwhile, Le Switch returns tomorrow night to the site of their February Spaceland (MySpace) residency, opening for Nashville-based Clem Snide (MySpace).

Special thanks to Le Switch, Radar Bros., The Echo, and Kidrockers.

One parents blog about the show ... http://solidgoldstein.com/2009/04/03/alberta-cross/

I was at a nightclub recently with my 16-month old son.  He danced on a cocktail table.

Fortunately for both of us, it was a Sunday afternoon and he wasn’t the only young’un in the crowd.   I had taken him to a “kidrockers” (http://www.kidrockersusa.com/) concert at the Living Room on the Lower East Side of Manhattan – a twice-monthly concert series featuring up-and-coming musicians, playing their own tunes (at lower volumes) in a participatory, child-friendly environment.

The Henry Clay People from L.A. and Alberta Cross from Brooklyn – both part of a soldout Bowery Ballroom show with The Airborne Toxic Event later that evening – each played a short set.  These were two of the best young bands I’d seen in such an intimate setting in quite a while.  Of course there was a novelty – a purity, really – to clapping, dancing and fist-pumping with my son.  So after the show, I picked up Alberta Cross’ 2007 EP The Thief and the Heartbreaker, and as confirmation, it’s been in heavy rotation since.  The title track is a Crazy Horse-influenced rocker.  However, one finds the heart of the record in the slower songs that feature Petter Ericson Stakee’s penetrating, high and lonesome vocals layered over ambling organ and guitar work.

These guys have signed to ATO Records (home to My Morning Jacket and Gomez, to which they draw comparisons) and I have high expectations for their June LP release.  They’re also doing the 2009 festival circuit (Coachella, Mountain Jam and Bonnaroo).  Here’s one of my favorites from the EP:

Kidrockers presents The Vivian Girls and The Bones Royal January 11, 2009

Kidrockers celebrates the New Year with a couple of NYC trios on -- a girl band that loves reverb, bubblegum pop, and distorted guitars and a boy band that opts for acoustic guitars, rootsy harmonies and a classic rock vibe.

Vivian Girls and Bones Royal
Living Room
January 11

Kids under 8 make incredible hecklers. Their approach is disarming: a combination of pure curiosity, unwieldy imagination, and a total lack of sarcasm. As Bones Royal, a countrified three-piece from the LES, were tuning up at Sunday afternoon's Kidrockers show at The Living Room, headlined by The Vivian Girls, a bed-headed 6-year-old shrieked: "That's making my heart beat so fast!" It was impossible to tell if he was joking or serious. Guitarist Foley Stewart blushed, and looked confused. "Thanks?" he said.

At Kidrocker gigs, two bands play 4 or 5 originals at low volume, swapping out dirty words, and engage in a Q&A with the children, moderated by hosts Seth Herzog and Craig Baldo. The idea is that hip parents can see their favorite bands with their kids, fostering an appreciation for grown-up music, and ideally replacing The Wiggles with Nada Surf. On Sunday, though, the performances took a backseat to the kids' savage wit. From the Q&A's:

Herzog: Do you play an instrument?
4-year-old boy: I pretend to play trombone.

7-year-old girl [to Vivian Girls]: If you had a boy in your band, would you change your name?
Cassie Ramone: Probably not. We had a guy fill in on drums once.
7-year-old girl: Was the guy annoyed?

Baldo: Fill in this Beach Boys lyric. God only know where I'd be without...
5-year-old girl: Lederhosen!

The kids kneeled or sat Indian style on a carpet of Twister mats near the front of the stage. For much of Bone Royal's set, they gazed at the trio with frightening stoicism, like the stoned mod rock audience in Antonioni's Blow Up. Afterwards, one child asked bluntly, "Why are you called Royal?" "Well," Stewart confessed, unable to lie or riff his way out of it, "the honest answer to that is we liked the word 'bones,' and put 'royal' next to it."

The Vivian Girls, with their babysitting experience and child-friendly lyrics ("No" uses only one word), were more integrative. They piled the kids on stage right away, handing out tambourines and encouraging wild, cacophonic sing-alongs. Still, they were nervous, having refused the free drink-tickets. Bassist Kickball Katy: "We thought, 'We can't drink in front of kids!'"

The next one happens at 92Y Tribeca February 15, from 1 to 2:30. It's BYOK (Bring Your Own Kid), so try to befriend one in the meantime.--Jed Lipinski
